We have done a lot of party themes over the years. From a National Park Birthday fit for an Adventurer, the Ultimate Art Party for Kids and a Pancake and Pajama Party that will knock your slippers right off! When Evie’s 9th Birthday began to approach, I asked her what kind of party she would like. I was shocked when she said, “A Tea Party”. For some reason I thought we had outgrown tea parties. So, I made it my mission to come up with the best Tea Party ideas for older girls. They are little ladies after all, so a high tea seemed fitting. Here is how we threw a darling tea party birthday for Evie and what I did to add WHIM. Keep reading below for links to everything you need to recreate this party theme for girls.

Tea Party Birthday Decor
When I think of a tea party, I think of everything floral, vintage and fancy. A must is a place to sit and enjoy high tea. Keep reading below for food ideas. When thinking of decor, balloons didn’t seem to go with a tea party. As much as I love a good balloon arch or garland, we needed something a little more “grown-up” for these princesses in training. How about a wall of flowers? This giant wall of pink flowers made the perfect backdrop for tea party fun. It was the ultimate photo back drop and seemed so magical. Floral or lace tablecloths and cute teacups can add a lot to your birthday display too. I am obsessed with these bud vases that look like stacked teapots and cups.
Tea Party Food Ideas
You can’t have a party without food and you certainly can’t have a tea party without tea and finger sandwiches. Trays of tea sandwiches, fruit and cookies were served at our tea party. To say that the girls giggled their faces off is an understatement! Here are a few recipes that would be absolutely darling for a tea party birthday. Don’t forget the tea. We recommend that you serve caffine-free tea for kids. Rose or Raspberry are great kid-friendly flavors. Make sure to snag some sugar cubes too. I love these heart shaped sugar cubes!
Savory Snacks:
Tea Sandwiches are a great make-ahead food for your tea party. Some suggestions for kids would be
- Peanut Butter and Jelly
- Cream Cheese and Cucumber
- Pimento Cheese
- Turkey/Ham and Cheese
- Chicken Salad (Check out my easy recipe HERE)
When making your tea sandwiches make sure to cute them into small squares or shapes. For some reason they taste better that way! This set of mini food cutters would be perfect! I use them all the time for snack boards.
You could also make:
- Cheese and Crackers
- Ladybug Appetizers
- Fruit Cups
Sweet Treats:
- Chocolate Covered Strawberries
- Cupcakes
- Tea Party Themed Sugar Cookies
- Macarons
Activities for a Kids Tea Party
One thing that most little girls love to do is dress up, and a tea party is the perfect event to get all dolled up for. The girls played dress up forever! They had so much fun changing out accessories, trying on hats and gloves, and switching their dresses. They wanted the perfect ensemble for their high tea party. Because of all the wardrobe changes we put on an epic fashion show. The girls had so much fun doing this. We played music and let them come out and model their outfits. At the end we took pictures and printed them off from the phone so they could take a picture home with them. I highly recommend this photo printer that connects to smartphones. It’s just a great thing to have in general!
We also took a minute to make princess crowns. They all sat, and colored and decorated paper crowns and they seemed to really enjoy this activity too. It was fun to see how each girl decorated their princess crown. If you didn’t want to decorate crowns, I’m a huge fan of the giant color sheets for parties. It always gets everyone gathered around the table and working together! It’s a super easy activity for kids that doesn’t require a lot of set up. The Tea Time Color Sheet would be perfect for this party.
The final activity was of course the high tea. They all sat like little ladies and enjoyed being pampered and waited on. It was so cute!
Party Favors for a Tea Party Birthday
When I was thinking of what kind of party favors to make for older girls, I wanted to do something they could all use. I found THE CUTEST bath bombs in the shape of a tea pot and wrapped them in a cellophane bag. Evie added a lip gloss, butterfly clips, a cute kids spa mask and beaded bracelets. The favors were super girly and fun. Each girl also went home with a group picture from their fashion show and the paper crown they decorated at the party.
We had such a good time at our tea party. All the girls really enjoyed getting fancy and acting like little ladies at their high tea.
