We love family game time. Maybe it’s the quality time we get to spend as a family, or maybe it’s that we are extremely competitive? Either way, we have accumulated a wonderful collection of games and over the years. With three little ones in the house, games often get pulled out, played with and then randomly stuffed into whatever nook they could get the box to fit. With so many games and so many bulky boxes, our game cabinet became a puzzle on its own just to find something to play with. Here is my favorite hack for organizing your family game cabinet. Another post I know you will enjoy after this one is How I store my Kids Keepsakes. You can check that out HERE.

The first step for organizing your family games and puzzles is to sort through everything. Toss or donate the games that are no longer played with or have missing parts. Then I made piles.
I sorted everything into 4 piles.
- Puzzles
- Decks of Cards, Card Games and Dice
- Board Games
- Crafts (Jewelry bead kits, craft kits, diamond art)
These are the 4 major categories in our home, but feel free to sort your game cabinet in a way that better fits your family.
Then I stored everything in the sections above.
How To Organize your Family Games
What you need:
- Set of Clear Zipper Pouches
- Label Maker (optional but very helpful)
I started out by taking each game, all the pieces, and the direction manual and placing them in the appropriately sized zipper bag. Then I took the old game box and threw it straight into the trash. You have no idea how oddly satisfying it was to toss those half broken cardboard boxes away. I repeated this step with each game. For card games we had them wrapped in a rubber band and we were always losing cards. I used one of the small zipper pouches in the set for each card game like UNO, Old Maid, SkiBO, etc.

You can use this same system for all your puzzles, but we dicided not to because we were able to easily stack all our puzzles. Plus, I like to stand the box up when I work on a puzzle, so I wasn’t ready to get rid of those boxes just yet.
Once you have your games in their zipper pouch you can label the front by printing the name on a label maker (this is what I did) OR you can cut the name off the original box and slip it inside.
How to Organize
I organized our family game cabinet in sections. All the puzzles stacked together on one side and all of our games on the other. I was able to put all the small zipper pouches into one of my favorite small organization bins. All the larger games stacked neatly, vertically right below. I was SHOCKED to see how many games I could fit on one shelf with this new organization system for family games.
As for crafts and craft like games, those all went on the far right side of the cabinet. I stacked craft kit boxes like our Kiwi Co Kits. Then I used the zipper pouches for things like beads for jewelry making and storing the kids diamond art kits. Have you heard of those? My kids are obsessed with these and they are so cool!
