It’s official, I think Summer Birthdays might be my favorite. This year for Tessa’s birthday we decided to go with a Luau theme. If you’ve followed over the years, you’ve seen all the fun Patry Themes we’ve done. For a Summer birthday, this Luau Theme seemed so festive!

My kids always get to pick the theme for their birthday party. Tessa was so excited at the thought of grass skirts, pineapples and water games. I decided to take the Luau theme but go with a more “Palm Spring”/ “Retro” Twist. Here is how we threw a Luau Birthday Party for our little Hula Girl.
Luau Birthday Party Decorations
Upon arriving to the house, each guest got a lei and a grass skirt! Once inside and dressed for the party they made their way to lots of fun. We did colorful balloons with paper palm leaves sticking out. The backdrop was like a grass skirt and a large “aloha” sign. Around the kitchen table I attached another grass skirt and laid faux palm leaves down the center as a runner. We had bright and colorful flowers in vases and a hollowed-out pineapple (so cute!). A letterboard read “Aloha, Tessa is 7”.
Luau Birthday Party Food
I love to use food as part of the party display. So, we had LOTS of fruit. I cut up kiwi, pineapple, mango and watermelon. I displayed it in on a giant tray and stuck some toothpick palm trees and umbrellas in them.
We had Hawaiian Rolls with pulled pork sandwiches, chips, pasta salad and the cutest Hawaiian themed sugar cookies you’ve ever seen. The cookies were so yummy, and the kids went crazy over the shapes. We had flip flops, grass skirts, pineapples and hibiscus flowers. You can check out the Etsy Shop we ordered the cookies from HERE.
The cake was a simple, grocery store cake that I added some fake flowers to and topped with a coconut cup with an umbrella sticking out.
Luau Birthday Party Games
Summer is the perfect excuse to take the fun outside and play in the water. I ordered the most adorable Pineapple Sprinkler that has officially become our favorite thing of all time. It sprays really high up in the air, so the girls had a blast running all around and getting sprayed with water. We also did a water balloon fight and played a fun lei relay race. We ended the games with an epic game of limbo. Rex and I may have given it a shot and quickly realized we aren’t as limber as we once were. haha
Looking for something to do indoors? Maybe your party is too hot or maybe you hit some bad luck with weather. This ALOHA giant color sheet is a great activity for younger kids or for the ones that might not want to be outside. Just roll out the giant color sheet and set out some crayons and you will be amazed by how many kids will gather around for the fun!
Luau Birthday Party Favors
For Favors I made each girl a hair clip with items found from the dollar store. I took a clip and hot glued a large flower to the top. We also gave the girls some fun Summer Cups (also found at the Dollar Store).
We had such a fun time at Tessa’s Luau Party! If you love this idea for a Birthday Party check out these favorite items so you can recreate it too!
