Sometimes it takes a while before you get around to a home project. This laundry closet of ours sat bare and boring for 8 years. Finally, I got the itch to turn it into something. Anything would do! I secretly hoped it would make me want to do the laundry more. Here is how we transformed our Laundry Closet Makeover for under $200.
As much as I hate to show it. Let’s take a look at the before (that we lived with for 8 years)
This project didn’t start off on a good foot. I originally had my heart set on doing removeable wallpaper in this small space. How hard could that be? Well, it ended up being an epic fail and hundreds of dollars down the drain. I decided that I would leave the wallpaper idea behind and turn this tiny space into an epic update for the least amount of money as possible.

Here is How we Updated our Laundry Closet
First step was removing the existing shelf. It was too high which made filling up the washing machine a pain in the butt. Once the walls were bare, I gave the space a new look with good old paint. I went with the color Hunters Pointe and LOVE it! It is a bluish-green that looks so pretty with our bold, black and white tile floors in the hallway. I struggle with picking colors that I like and this one was perfect for me!
Once the paint dried it was time to put new shelved up. I picked these light wood shelves and a more modern, black bracket. Having a shelf closer to the washer and dryer has been a game changer for us. No more reaching high to grab what we need.
Now that the shelves were hung it was time for all the fun! Getting to decorate and reorganize was my favorite part. I added some pretty wall prints for color. To organize everything, I bought this set of gallon glass jars. They are only $19 for 2 and perfect for holding my laundry detergent. Keep reading below to see what we use for non-toxic laundry. I also bought a set of glass pump bottles for my DIY fabric softener. To add some extra WHIM, I made these adorable labels to stick on the front.
I also placed all my wool dryer balls in a woven basket next to a plant stand that I used for my essential oils and my magic stain stick. On the top shelf I stored some other laundry items we sometimes need to grab like my Thieves Dish Soap which is amazing for stains and some hydrogen peroxide. I put them in a cute wooden caddy. A few white rags folded in case we needed to clean something up and ta-da!
I can’t even tell you how much joy I get when I open up these laundry room doors now. I can’t believe it took me so long to do this home project! So happy with how it turned out.

Have you made the Switch to Clean, Non-Toxic Laundry Products?
To ditch and switch can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be! It’s actually very simple to change out your laundry to clean products. Why ditch products found at the store? Did you know that detergent manufacturers are not required by law to list all their ingredients on their packaging? Laundry products at the store are NO BUENO. Yes, even the ones marketed for babies can have high levels of toxic chemicals. Most laundry products contain synthetic fragrances, which can be toxic. They also can contain optical brighteners and florescent dyes.
Studies have shown that most laundry detergents and dryer sheets contain poisons that leave residue on the clothing you wear, the bedding you sleep in, and everything else you put in the wash.
Laundry is the perfect first step in ditching and switching the products in your home and lessening your toxic burden.
Here is what our family uses
My personal favorite is Molly’s Suds and Distilled White Vinegar. It is less than half the cost of normal laundry pods, free of toxic materials and works just as good (if not better) for getting clean laundry. I do 1-2 Tbs. of Mollys straight into the bottom of the washing machine. I like to add essential oils for scent. Then fill the fabric softener dispenser with a mixture of distilled white vinegar, a splash of rubbing alcohol and drops of my favorite essential oil (lushious lemon is my favorite for laundry). The vinegar helps lift stains, odors and softens fabric. When it is time to dry your laundry use wool dryer balls with a few drops of essential oils (Geranium and Joy are SO good).
