I get asked all the time, “How do you get your kids to eat such healthy foods”. My kids would devour 5 bell peppers in one sitting if I let them. Those tiny berry containers are gone in the blink of an eye if I set it on the counter and walk away. I’m actually really proud of the kids and how many healthy foods they love to eat. When I was growing up I didn’t even know what an avocado was.
The secret to getting kids to eat fruits and veggies? Make it look fun! Snack trays are my favorite and I’ve learned that if I cut things up small, or display them in shapes the kids aren’t intimidated by something new. They are much more willing to try it. Sure, it takes a little time to put together a snack tray, but if it gets the kids to munch and love healthier options, I say it is totally worth it. For St. Patrick’s Day the kids were dying to make a rainbow snack tray so I let them take the reins and build their own fruit and veggie tray themselves. Keep reading below to see what they picked and how they put it together!

First thing you need is a cutting board or a tray. There are so many options out there. You can do square or round, white or wood, and large or small. Here are a few that I always tend to grab. They are great sizes and really great quality. I love that when I’m not using them for snack time or parties that I can display them in the kitchen!

What the Kids Picked for Their Fruit and Veggie Tray
Since we were doing a rainbow snack tray for St. Patrick’s Day we knew we needed all the colors of the rainbow. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple. Here is what they chose to add to the fruit and veggie tray.
- Strawberries
- Raspberries
- Orange Bell Pepper
- Carrots
- Cheddar Cheese
- Yellow Bell Pepper
- Cucumber
- Blackberries
- Red Grapes
We just used things we had on hand. We didn’t really have anything “blue” but the blackberries worked great. Here are some other options you could do…
- Blueberries
- Banana
- Kiwi
- Red Bell Pepper
- Broccoli
- Green Apple
- Celery
- Edamame
- Sugar Snap Peas
- Green Grapes
To finish off their rainbow they found some mini marshmallows and bunched them at the bottom of their rainbow to look like clouds. Then they spread their chocolate coins underneath. Can you guess what they went for first? Yup, the chocolate.
I hope this idea has inspired you to get the kids involved in the kitchen. Sometimes just letting them build art out of food with encourage them to try new things. Everything tastes better when it looks fun don’t you think?
