The Holiday hustle and excitement has come to an end and we have been in complete clean out and organization mode in our house. One of the things I came across was the giant mound of cardboard boxes left over from all those Holiday gifts I ordered online. I didn’t want to just toss them all. I decided to take a few of the boxes and have a fun craft day with the kids.
We have had some fun making cardboard creations in the past. Make sure to check out the giant sail boat we made last year. The girls got to choose what to make with our leftover boxes and they decided they wanted to make a puppet theater.
How to Make your Carboard Theater
I took 3 large to medium sized boxes and used a razorblade to break them completely down. I laid them out in a straight line and taped them together to make one giant sheet of cardboard. Then I cut a large whole in the middle to make my window. Standing the theater up I folded the sides and taped them back so it would stand up on its own.
How to WHIM your Puppet Theater
Now the fun part! Anytime I pull out paints, the kids come running. So we brought our theater outside and I let them paint the inside and sides. They had so much fun adding paint to it.
After the paint dried I decided to add some white polka dots to give it some dimension. I cut a circle out of a sponge and used that to stamp on white polka dots.
Lastly I rummaged through my craft bins and found some leftover fabric to make a curtain. I stapled the fabric to the top of the window and then tied back with string. I also made some yarn pom poms and tassels and hot glued them on to make the puppet theater extra special and fun.
Handmade Cardboard Puppets
You can’t have a puppet theater without puppets. I designed some cute little woodland animals in party hats to make characters for their shows. You can download and print them HERE. I printed them on our home printer and then glued them onto a piece of cardboard. Then I hot glued a wooden dowel for a handle.
The kids have had a blast acting out scened and stories with their cardboard puppet show. It was such a great way to resuse all those cardboard boxes leftover from the holidays and has given the kids hours of creative play.
