I love coming up with easy DIY projects using items I already had around the house. I found the cutest little wooden houses in the Target Dollar Spot this year. They were really fun as is, but I thought it would be really fun to paint them and make a little, Scandinavian style snow village for the girl’s bedroom this year.
I had heard of a trend going around where you take baking soda and add it to paint to get a more matte / texture look. I thought this would be the perfect project to try that trick on.

So I snagged some paint samples I had left over from the girl’s bedroom when I made their book nook arch and got to work.
What you need to make a snow village like this:
- Paint
- Baking Soda
- Mini Wood Houses
- Paint Pen
- Paint Brush
- Bottle Brush Trees
- Twinkle Lights with Timer
- Fake Snow Sheet
First step was to pour some paint into a bowl. I eyeballed it and did about 1/4 cup of paint (not very much).
Then I mixed about 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. of baking soda in. NOTE: The more baking soda you add the thicker and more texture you will get.
Paint on your object just like you would any other paint. Let dry.
Once my little houses were dry I took a white paint pen and made little accent dots along the roof and windows. Each house is a little bit different. I like how the little white dots add some dimension.
Once I was done painting them, I set the houses up on the end table in-between the girls beds. I laid some fake snow and added in some fun bottle brush trees. The final touch to add some extra WHIM was twinkling string lights. It turned out so magical!
P.S. I used the new timer lights for this area so they will automatically turn on when their room gets dark and then automatically turn off after the girls fall asleep. Best invention ever!
