It’s time for Back to School and there is no better way to get the kids excitement up than to throw a fun little party. I love celebrating the First Day of School with the kids. The anticipation of who they will have in their class, what will their teacher be like and all the new school supplies makes it such a fun time of year. Here is how I threw a Back to School Party for my kiddos.
Decorative Details
Doing a school themed party is so much fun. There are so many items you can grab around your house to make it feel like a classroom. I put up a large world map as a back drop and hung a felt pom pom garland. Some other fun details were a few old books, a large mason jar I filled with green apples and a mini green chalkboard easel.
Easy Handmade Decor
I did a few super simple DIY projects for the party too. I made a cute cake topper out of teacher pointers, school themed ribbons and some “A, B, C” Cards. Instead of sticking the cake topper into a cake, I decided to put it in a huge pile of powdered donuts. That was a total hit with the kids. I love how the cake topper turned out so much, I plan to keep it and use it every year to celebrate the First Day of School.
To display fresh flowers, I made a school themed vase using an old glass one I had on hand and some cute color block rulers I found at Target. I also made another small vase with crayons. I’ll be sharing a tutorial on these 3 easy and fun Back to School Crafts and my secret tip for making them under 10 minutes in another blog post soon.
Back to School Menu
I took a chalkboard framed in rulers and wrote out a menu for the party. It included fun snacks like powdered donuts, cheese and crackers, and apple slices. The girls helped me make the cutest pencil cookies for the party. These are great to make with your kids and would be really fun and special after school snack.
Pencil Cookie Recipe
- wafer cookies
- pink icing
- white icing
- chocolate chips
To make the pencil cookies…
Take a knife and cut two corners of the wafer cookie so it is in the shape of a pencil. Spread white icing on the top (the end that you cut the corners) and spread pink icing on the bottom. Top with a chocolate chip at the tip of the pencil. Done! Quick, Easy and Oh so Yummy!
Last but not least, a cocktail for the parents. Because this year the adults earn Extra Credit with our extra credit cocktail recipe.
Extra Credit Cocktail
- glass of sparkling wine
- splash of Cran Apple Juice
- splash of Ginger Ale
- garnish with an apple slice
Back to School Activity
Roll out these giant “All About Me” Coloring sheets for the First Day of School! What a great activity for your kids to work on. It makes a great memory keepsake that you can look back on too! You can store them in my DIY Keepsake Box Organization System. Read all about that HERE.
It ended up being a really fun way to celebrate the kids back to school. The girls seem excited and ready to start now. I love doing things like this for them. I hope they will remember these moments celebrating the start of a new school year.
