Fiesta like there is no Manana. I love a good Birthday Party Theme and when Tessa told me she wanted a cactus party and a pinata for her 5th Birthday, I instantly knew where this was going to go… Fiesta Time. Out of all the kids Birthday themes, this Fiesta Themed Birthday Party has to be one of my favorites so far.

Here is what we did for Tessa’s Fiesta Party.
It all starts with cute decor! There are so many fun decorations for a Cinco De Mayo or Cactus Themed Party. I found THE cutest Mexican Flags Papel Picado Banner to hang on the back patio. They weren’t the cheap plastic ones you usually find. These are large and made of felt and could be used in other fun ways. I placed the extras down the table to mimic a table runner. This was my favorite thing that I bought for the party. I’m saving them to display every year for Cinco de Mayo.
The rest of the decor was pretty simple. I found a great set of party balloons that included everything I needed. Green and pink balloons, some green paper tassels and even a cactus shaped balloon. These cute cut out cactus table décor were a fun addition. I even changed the picture on our Samsung Frame TV to an image of the desert just for her party. Some bright colored flowers filled a few vases and I filled glass jars with cut up lemons and limes.
But the WOW factor were these adorable glasses made out of Topo Chico bottles. A friend I made through Instagram, Carolina saw we were doing a Fiesta Party for Tessa. She reached out to me and asked if I wanted to use them for the party. Aren’t these the cutest things you have ever seen? We used them for adult cocktails and they were the talk of the party. Check her Instagram page out HERE to see how she made these cute glasses and for other fun inspiration.
It’s not a Fiesta without Good Food
Want to know what I loved most about throwing a Fiesta Party? The Food! Rex totally outdid himself with the delicious spread. He made carnitas, Carne Asada, homemade chimichurri sauce, guacamole, Spanish rice, and a Mexican coleslaw. It was over the top and totally mouthwatering. How do I talk him into making this spread for Taco Tuesday every week?
Fiesta Cocktails
We had to make party drinks for the adults to go with our Topo Chico Cups. I made a pitcher of Sangria, and we had all the fixings for homemade Margaritas. One of my favorite details were the cute picks I found with the colorful balls on the end. We used those in our cocktails to hold lemon and lime wedges.
Cactus Birthday Cake
One of my cost saving tips for throwing a party is with the birthday cake. Buying a fancy cake from a bakery is so expensive. I know they are unbelievable and totally Pinterest worthy, but I made the mistake for my first daughters 1st birthday when I bought a fancy cake for her party and was SHOCKED when I realized how much it cost. Although I want a beautiful cake for my kids birthday parties, I’d rather spend that money somewhere else.
So since Everly’s 1st birthday, I never bought a fancy bakery cake again. I’ve either made the cake myself or bought a grocery store cake and spruced it up on my own. I’ve made a smash cake that looked like a golf ball for my son’s Hole In One First Birthday and a cake covered in sprinkles for my daughters Rainbow Paint Party. This time I bought a cake topper that matched the Mexican flags hanging on the back porch. I stuck it in the top of a cake from the local grocery store and BAM, total cuteness. Tessa loved her cake!
DIY Mini Piñata Party Favors
I had bought mini cactus piñatas from Target to be the party favors for the kids, but only received 1 in time for the party. So I ended up making my own DIY Mini Piñatas out of toilet paper rolls, tissue paper and some string. I filled them with some tiny treasures like a coin purse, some fake jewelry and stamps. They turned out super cute and the kids were really excited about them. To watch my video tutorial on how I made them head to my Instagram Page and watch my Saved Highlights under “Fiesta Party”.
The party was so much fun. We got lucky with beautiful weather and we were able to sit on the back patio and watch the kids hit the big cactus piñata and run around in the backyard. When it was time for musical chairs (one of Tessa’s requests), I played Mariachi music for them and they got the biggest kick out of it.
Out of all the Birthday themes I have done so far, this is one of my favorites. I love that I can save all the decor and reuse it for Cinco de Mayo each year.
